(Merced) – Assemblyman Adam Gray officially became a candidate for California’s 13th Congressional District on Monday.
Just a day after his resounding victory in winning the endorsement from the California Democratic Party, Gray officially submitted his nomination papers in Merced. He is the only candidate for the office who currently lives in the newly drawn district.
“This Valley is my home,” said the five-term Assemblyman. “It’s where I was raised, where my friends and family live. Every day I see how hard everyone is working to make this place better and stronger and provide opportunities for everyone who lives here. That’s what we’re about.”
On Saturday, Gray received the overwhelming endorsement of the California Democratic Party, outpolling all other candidates by a 2-to-1 margin. The 13th district was newly drawn earlier this year and now includes parts of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera and Fresno counties – encompassing the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Roughly 70% of the voters living in the new Congressional district are already represented by Assemblyman Gray. Gray has forged a reputation as a ferocious advocate for the Valley, willing to reach across the aisle and work with politicians of both parties and independents to achieve results. In his tenure, Gray has led the fight to develop water storage that benefits both agriculture and wildlife, create a Valley medical school at UC Merced, fight gang violence and forge a commuter rail link between the Valley and the Bay Area. In each of those efforts, he linked arms with Republicans and other Democrats to achieve results. “Our Valley cannot and will not be ignored by Congress,” Gray said. “Our challenges are great, but so are the contributions that the people of this Valley bring to the table. As part of the San Joaquin Valley, we help feed the world, but we can and will do more.” Already, he has amassed a tremendous list of supporters from within the district, statewide and nationally. Local endorsements have come from sheriffs Vern Warnke of Merced County, Margaret Mims of Fresno, and Jeff Dirkse of Stanislaus; 9 county supervisors, 15 city councilmembers and 7 mayors. Gray also has support from educators, construction workers and farmers as well as from Congressman Jim Costa and Sen. Alex Padilla among others. California’s primary election is scheduled for June 7.
